This design is a geometric series of star forms subtended from the vertices of the semi-regular grid of dodecagons and equilateral triangles, which are each then inscribed with the next dodecagon before another repeat of the same order of star - creating the look of a fractured surface with an expanding shockwave from each point of impact. The specific star chosen is the one which respects the equilateral triangle of the original polygon grid - to seamlessly connect the units. The logarithmic size reduction could theoretically be continued indefinitely beyond the 4 levels shown. Currently displaying a version in shades of green from chartreuse to dark lime like the spiny lobes of a succulent or cactus plant.
