About the Design

IMPORTANT NOTE: When tailoring this fabric into a waistcoat, ignore any orientation that Spoonflower prints on the edges of the length and instead cut the velvet so that it feels rough when stroked downwards and smooth when stroked upwards. The design as seen in this webpage is inverted to its correct orientation, so that when Spoonflower prints it, the design will be in the correct orientation relative to the velvet’s pile direction. By cutting the material with the velvet “pile-up”, the end result will yield a slightly deeper, richer, and more matte colour. One metre/yard of fabric should make one and a half waistcoats, so two metres/yards will make three waistcoats assuming the sizes aren’t unusually large. The scale of the pattern repeat has been calculated accurately using measurements taken directly from the original patches seen on the “Shada” scarf. This is useful in reverse engineering a cutting pattern, as by knowing the design’s scale is accurate one can figure out the correct proportions from there. Tom’s waistcoat would’ve been around a size medium (38-40 chest) for reference. Tom Baker's most ubiquitous waistcoat that he used during his tenure as the Fourth Doctor was his velvet waistcoat used between Season 13 and Season 17 of the classic series. Performance Velvet is the best fabric to have this printed on as it is far less shiny than the other one Spoonflower offers. One yard is enough to make one waistcoat with plenty of leftover fabric that could be used for Shada scarf patches. Two yards would be enough to make three waistcoats and still have leftover fabric for patches. This fabric was used in the following stories: S13 - Terror of the Zygons S13 - Planet of Evil S13 - Pyramids of Mars S13 - The Android Invasion S13 - The Brain of Morbius S13 - The Seeds of Doom S14 - The Masque of Mandragora S14 - The Hand of Fear S14 - The Deadly Assassin S14 - The Face of Evil S14 - The Robots of Death S15 - Horror of Fang Rock S15 - The Invisible Enemy S15 - Image of the Fendahl S15 - The Sun Makers S15 - Underworld S17 - Destiny of the Däleks S17 - City of Death S17 - The Horns of Nimon S17 - Shada (as patches on the scarf)
