Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a group of inherited disorders that affect connective tissues in the body including skin, joints and blood vessel walls. EDS and other invisible illnesses are often represented by a zebra because they are a rare example of "when you hear hoofbeats, you expect a horse, not a zebra." The zebras are holding spoons in their mouths as a reference to "the spoon theory" which is a way of explaining how people with these types of illnesses need to be aware of how much energy they extend throughout the day, because that energy is limited!
