About the Design

Jane Austen loved her garden at Chawton, Hampshire. A source of inspiration for passages of her

novels, this design was sketched out there, where many of the plants she knew and described are now grown.

I live very close to Chawton, and often visit the village and Jane Austen's garden. In a rural setting, very typical of Hampshire, the garden is not as large as when Jane lived there. During her occupation there was an orchard, a shrubbery walk, a dairy and a few animals including geese such as those illustrated. The door shown still exists with the pretty climbing rose around it. The garden has now been restored with flowers and plants that Jane, her Mother, and sister Cassandra grew there.
