The three cities that have meant the most to the early development of jazz - New Orleans, Chicago, and New York City. Jazz evolved from spirituals and has run through the various forms depicted in this design. Saxophones seem to be featured prominently in all forms, and the "anatomically correct" drawings with smoky wisps curling up from them are a nod to the nightclubs and coffeehouses where jazz flourished.
