As people moved around country they scattered or drilled-in seeds harvested from other places. European settlers came and saw the results - but did not recognise them as a product of 'gardening' as there were no obvious fences, rows of plants, or irrigation structures... and the first peoples were denigrated as being 'without agriculture'.
