From as early as the sixteenth century magnificent depictions of waves crashing on rocky shores were painted on folding screens known as "rough seas screens". Historically, the constant cycle of waves has signified serenity as well as powerful ferocity and resilience. The endless ebb and flow of water along the shore is a permanent reminder of both the passing of time as well as the hazardous power of the ocean. As main background color the calming, opal blue shade was used to complement delicate white waves.
