yarn-dyed indigo fabric.
This is a design that imitates Japanese Sashiko embroideries, which actually aren't 'embroideries' as in 'just decorative', but a way of mending and recycling torn clothes.
The background of the design imitates yarn-dyed indigo fabric, with the typical, slightly irregular, greenish-blue weave.
I have created an entire collection of Sashiko designs (http://www.spoonflower.com/collections/26993), including a 'plain' Indigo design (http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/1506075) (without the mock embroidery).
In case you would like to order swatches of those designs, the Sashiko design sampler (http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/1583408) is a very good alternative to 'regular' swatches - it has all my Sashiko designs on one yard of fabric - that design is also available printed on many other products on Cafepress (http://www.cafepress.com/PhantasmDesigns/10139354?aid=110890528) as well as on Zazzle (http://www.zazzle.com/bonniephantasm/gifts?cg=196064189189353758&rf=238791567683211815)!
If you would like to order this or any of the other designs in my store at a different scale or in different colors, please don't hesitate to send me a message - that's all it takes to make that happen at no additional costs.
If you were always wondering how different colors print on the various fabrics that Spoonflower offers, please do have a look at my website where I have quite a few comprehensive photos of color swatches printed on various fabrics!
