1.5 yards - to see the complete repeat, please switch to a '2 yards' view!
This is a reproduction of the 'stained' (or painted) skirt fabric that Queen Elizabeth I. wore in the 'Hardwick' portrait which was painted in 1592 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Elizabeth_I_of_England_Hardwick_1592.jpg) (click to see the portrait on Wikipedia!). Note that the length-wise repeat is 1.5 yards. To see the complete repeat, please switch to the '2 yards' view! Since the Spoonflower preview is very blurred, please also see the 'Fat Quarter' respectively 'swatch' view to see the details more clearly. Also, please read the rest of this description for details on the width-wise repeat! This is NOT an exact reproduction; some of the flowers and animals on the skirt differ from the original fabric. However, the design is pretty close to the actual portrait skirt. The animals and flowers also have a 'painted silk' appearance; very similar to what we see in the protrait. For a complete skirt you will need at least three yards (meaning 2 repeats); but of course the amount also depends on the size of the French Farthingale you're planning to use. Personally I'd recommend the usage of 4.5 yards. I recommend having this printed on cotton silk. The problem with cotton silk, however, is that it's just 40 inches wide, which means you'll probably have to piece fabric to the 'upper' side of the skirt (or, Spoonflower-image-wise: right side of the preview). Since the fabric design is wider, you won't be able to piece that seamless. Another option would be the Organic Cotton Sateen. It does have a slight sheen, but not as much as the Cotton Silk; but it's 56 inches wide so you wouldn't have to piece the fabric to make the skirt fit over the farthingale.
