When I was a kid I used to scare my mother by disappearing beneath the waves at the beach. While some kids were only interested in how long they could hold their breath, I was more fascinated by the things light did to the water. Color became an almost physical thing, constantly breathing into different shades of blue. It pulsed. I'd lie on my back, sometimes floating, sometimes touching bottom, and in the odd, almost silence of this underwater world, I listened for the secrets whispered by the sea.
