My grandmother always used tablecloths, if she used nothing else she had an old red gingham checked oilcloth for the table. There was never anything more cozy then gathering at a table with fresh home grown food set out on her table with the red gingham checks. Grandma always had a touch of red in her home. Grandma also had tablecloths with roses and blue in the background. , that were for fancier occasions.
