painted her famous rose rose garden before it was lost.
Before the Empress Josephine, Pierre-Joseph Redoute was court botanical illustrator to Mme Antoinette. Having survived the revolution with his head intact, he illustrated the Empresses' world famous rose garden in luscious detail, before the garden was lost in a fire that burned the Empresses' home, Malmaison. Some of the roses were one-of-a-kind, having been bred by the Empress herself and all that remains of them are Redoute's illustrations.
