A war was brewing in Europe but Americans were keeping out of it as best they could. The US produced 4,680,000 cars that year (which counts all manufacturers together). Among them was the spacious and luxury targeted Hudson. Average selling price was about $800. Gasoline was around 18 cents a gallon. And these cars typically got in the 15 miles per gallon range. Nobody knew that there would be no consumer car production from 1942-1945 in 1940. But the people who bought a new1940 car were lucky. They had a reasonably low mileage vehicle to get them through the war. Of course, with gas and tires being rationed, some 1940 vehicles were still "like new" mileage wise after the war ended and auto production resumed. (file w104J-ch, #5369544)
