This design depicts nine African endangered animals. 1. Simian fox ( or jackel ), is the only wolf species found in Africa. It is similar to the coyote. 2. The Pygmy hippo is rare and elusive. It will stay in the water during the day and eat at night. 3. African Lion. There are fewer than 22,000 African lions accounted for and their numbers are dwindling. 4. African Elephant. The African elephant is the largest terrestrial mammal in the world. It is also one of the most endangered. 5, Addax (white antelope) There are only 200 Addax left in Africa. The are nomads that travel at night and eat grass and herbs. 6. Black-footed Penguin. They are the only penguins that breed in Africa. There are only 72,000 left. Their diet consists of anchovies and sardines. 7. Black Rhino. There are only 3,500 left in Africa. Their loss is mainly due to humans. 8. Mountain Gorilla. Their numbers are way down in the 650 range mainly due to deforestation and development. 9. Cape Parrot. There are fewer than 1000 cape parrots in the wild.
