elusive green flash at sunset/rise.
Please message me for custom colour/size requests. This design was originally made in yellow and pink (without the JR drill ship) for the East Fork limited palette design challenge - in which pale pink and yellow had to be used. I’m not sure how I ended up with a sky and ocean design when the colour palette had no blue in it, but I did. This design was inspired by my day job – as a marine geologist, researching submarine volcanos. In early 2022 I spent 2 months on a research expedition in the middle of the South Atlantic. At sea we work >12 hrs a day, 7 days a week for the full 2 months. Out in the middle of the ocean, with very little shipping traffic and only the occasional whale paying us a visit, the highlight of the day is taking a break to watch the sun rise or set over the ocean, waiting for the elusive green flash (a bright green flash as the sun breaks the horizon). It is very rare; in the 8 months I have spent at sea, I only ever saw the green flash once… but I saw many a beautiful sunset, and they inspired this design. When I made the original design I always hoped to have to recolour it using colours picked from actual sunset/sunrise photos taken by the scientists on IODP Expedition 390 - and in this very special version I have also added the JOIDES Resolution. Other versions are available in other SAT sunset colours and with/without the ship.
