While not endangered, brown pelicans are susceptible to harm from human activity. They live in marine areas where they can commonly become tangled in fishing line and suffer damage from oil spills. In the 1960s and 1970s, the pesticide DDT caused their eggs to become thin and fragile, almost wiping out the species, but due to pesticide regulation the species has recovered.
